The field event titled “Silent Witnesses of Wetlands: Burdur Lake and Yarışlı Lake” was organized by the Burdur Mehmet Akif Ersoy University (MAKÜ) Wildlife Protection, Rehabilitation Practice and Research Center to draw attention to the ecological importance of wetlands and the habitats of migratory birds.
The event, held within the scope of World Migratory Bird Day, was brought to life under the organization of Dr. Yasemin Özdemir, the Director of MAKÜ Wildlife Protection, Rehabilitation Practice and Research Center. First-year students from the Forestry Department of MAKÜ Gölhisar Vocational School participated in the event.
The first stop of the program was Şeker Beach located in the center of Burdur. Here, students were informed about the local wildlife, wetland ecosystems, the protection of migratory birds, and the sustainability of natural habitats by Tamer Yılmaz, the Hunting and Wildlife Branch Manager of the 6th Regional Directorate. During the information session held on the shores of Burdur Lake, students had the opportunity to examine the ecological structure of the area on-site and to get acquainted with the equipment used for bird observation.
Following the event, evaluations were made regarding the function of wetlands, changes occurring in the lake ecosystem, and bird populations on the shores of Burdur Lake's Public Beach. Dr. Yasemin Özdemir emphasized to the students that wetlands are of great importance not only in terms of water presence but also for the conservation of biological diversity and the sustainability of feeding and resting areas for migratory birds.
As part of the field study, students had the opportunity to closely examine the habitat structure, coastal ecosystems, and living spaces of birds by observing around Burdur Lake. Throughout the program, bird observation was conducted using observation equipment such as binoculars, telescopes, and cameras; practical information about the basic principles of fieldwork was provided to the students.
In the final part of the program, the group moved to Yarışlı Lake, which is located within the borders of Burdur province. During the field observations conducted around Yarışlı Lake, students were informed about the natural structure around the lake, the relationship between wetland and vegetation cover, the area usage of bird species, and the importance of habitat conservation. Students gained awareness of the conservation of natural areas through field walks and observation studies.
While the importance of Burdur Lake and Yarışlı Lake in terms of regional ecology was emphasized once again during the event, it was pointed out that wetlands are vital stops for migratory birds. The program aimed at enabling students to learn by observing nature on-site became an important educational activity in terms of supporting theoretical knowledge with field experience.
The event organized by MAKÜ Wildlife Protection, Rehabilitation Practice and Research Center contributed to raising awareness of nature conservation among students, understanding the ecological value of wetlands, and increasing awareness for the protection of migratory birds.
